Thankful - Marcos

Marcos is thankful for his goodies! (May, 2009)

Happy Easter, Marcos!

Here is a beautiful photo of Marcos and his mother receiving their food in March.

Marcos, New Table

Now Marcos and his family have a table to set food on. I am sure this will sit nicely on their cement floor!

Here's Marcos with his new school supplies... check out his new hair cut! He looks great!

Marcos In School

Marcos doing a little project - July 2008.

I can't wait until he has his new clothes in the tote I sent him!

Well, it must be very muddy right now in Guatemala. It's the rainy season. I feel really sad seeing Marcos like this, he's pretty dirty and has a runny nose.

He is happy though, he and his friends received new Beanie Babies!

Cement Floor

I am SOOOOOOOO excited! Marcos and his family are going to have their cement floor - courtesy of Aaron and his wife!

I'm sending out their quilt tomorrow morning!

This is going to make such an awesome difference in their lives! AWESOME!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

He's just too cute, he is so proud of his report card - and he should be!

Ah, looking at this photo of Marcos holding a picture that he colored made me really tear up. He's such a special kid - that whole family is really special to me!

Well, the families we sponsor were able to pick up the "Fathers Day Baskets."

Although, we don't see the fathers too often - it is because they are working constantly - for a very minimum amount of money.

Soon, we should have a photo of Rafael also... stay tuned! :)

His smile says it all... :)

Happy!

Look at how happy Marcos is... he has learned that there are people helping him and his family!

Today, we earned $480 in our garage sale! We decided to use that money to supply needs for the families of the children we sponsor.

We split the cost of an onil stove for Oscars family – also split cost of water filter and chickens… (split cost with the families that sponsor Oscars’ little sisters). Total= 92.50

Split cost of two beds with Rafaels sisters’ sponsor = $130.

One of Rafaels sisters sponsors supplied the family with an onil stove!

Marcos’ also has sisters. Their sponsors bought a bed and a water filter for his family.

I sent in the money so Marcos and his family will have a stove. $120. I also sent money for one more bed for his family. $130.

This means, we only have $7.50 left from the sale tonight – but look at what we accomplished!

A stove for Oscars family, a new bed and stove for Marcos’ family. A new stove, water filter and chickens for Oscars family. Two beds for Rafaels family.

Marcos' family still could use two more beds. All three families need a pila. One of the families is in need of a water filter. All three families need table/chairs, closets so they do not have to shove all of their clothes in a box. Rafael and Marcos both need chickens with supplies, I am waiting to hear if it is possible to hook up electric to Raphaels home. Oscars family still needs beds.

All families need food. I am taking blankets down in May (thanks to Candy!).

I could go on and on, but I am sleepy - it's been a long garage sale day - and I'm going to bed! :)

I will write soon with an updated list. J

The past few weeks I have felt very strongly that I need to do something else in the world. Something to not only better myself and my family, but help others around us. I've always had the desire to help others in need.

I have stepped out of my "comfort space" and into a new "adventure" so to say. I will blog my experiences to keep myself motivated, and to hopefully motivate others to make this world a better place as well.

Recently, our church announced they will be going on a trip to Guatemala to do volunteer work for the schools and community.
I really felt in my heart that I just needed to do this trip. My 11 year old son has also always wanted to help others. We talked about this in a "family meeting" and it was decided that my 11 year old son and I would go on the trip to Guatemala. We are unsure at this point if any one else in our family will be going. Right now, it just looks like the two of us.

Last night, I was talking to a friend of mine... Daphne - she runs the website, http://www.guatemalanharvest.com/ - it is a WONDERFUL website. She has a heart of gold and really does care about the people of Guatemala. Please take time to check out her website, as she really has inspired me to submerse myself into learning more about the Guatemalan culture.
After speaking with Daphne - we decided to sponsor a little boy named Marcos to go to school. We have paid for his first year of school. He is five years old. He lives in a mud brick home, with a tin roof, dirt floors, an outside kitchen, and his family cooks over wood, outside the home.

Right now I am trying to raise the money to buy an onil stove for the family, as this will help them save money. The onil stove provides not only a huge savings to the family, but it also offers a more healthy, and safe cooking place for families to use. Marcos' family cooks over an open fire outside at this point.

The cost for sponsoring a child is only $120. per year. This pays for school books, uniforms, paper, pencils, book bag, shoes and other items needed for the school year. This really is not a bad price to pay for education!

The cost for an onil stove is $125.

Daphnes site is terrific. Money that you donate to her will go 100% directly to help the children of Guatemala - I totally trust her and her husband (who is a CPT in the Army I might add!). She is not only collecting the gift of money, but also items such as stuffed animals, books in Spanish, long pants (no shorts), dresses, shoes, blankets, (there's a big need for blankets)...

The picture I have under this journal entry is of Marcos.
